The DJD Theater is proud to present the ArtWorks@TheDJD Series. This professional performance season is dedicated to presenting award-winning national and regional artists that reflect our community with diversity, equity, and inclusion at the forefront of our programming.
ArtWorks@TheDJD grew out of an experimental artist grant project undertaken during the COVID-19 pandemic. The inaugural digital series was a huge success. It provided commissioning grants to local artists and provided the community free access to the works during a time when most performing venues were closed.

Do You Speak Mexican? is a Regional Premiere starring Elena Maria Garcia and Christian Perez. The Miami Herald calls Elena Maria Garcia, “One of the funniest women to ever step on the stage.” A three-time Carbonell winner, Garcia and co-creator Christian Perez make their Alabama debut with a hilarious and inspirational exploration of a first generation Cuban-American family’s story of finding a place in the United States (performed in English). A night of laughter and theatrical brilliance you won’t want to miss. A night of celebration. Join the cast after the show for desserts and coffee.

For this 50th anniversary celebration, Pilobolus questions its own “givens,” turns its traditions sideways, and brings its past into the future. As fresh and vibrant as ever, Pilobolus –that feisty arts organism– puts the “Oh!” in BIG FIVE OH!, and continues to morph its way thrillingly into audiences’ hearts and minds.
The celebration includes signature works from vintage classics to their trend setting innovative work in shadow. Over the past 50 years, Pilobolus has performed around the globe in events ranging from the Oscars to the Olympics and collaborated with some of the world’s greatest influencers and creators.

Anton Nel, one of the world’s most accomplished classical pianist makes his Birmingham debut. Winner of the first prize in the 1987 Naumburg International Piano Competition at Carnegie Hall, Anton Nel continues to enjoy a remarkable and multifaceted career that has taken him to North and South America, Europe, Asia, and South Africa.
Highlights of Mr. Nel’s four decades of concertizing include performances with the Cleveland Orchestra, the symphonies of Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, Seattle, Detroit, and London, among many others. (He has an active repertoire of more than 100 works for piano and orchestra.) An acclaimed Beethoven interpreter, Anton Nel has performed the concerto cycle several times, most notably on two consecutive evenings with the Cape Philharmonic in 2005.

Folk musician Dawn Larsen makes her Alabama debut with this award winning show. A poignant comedy, highlighting 10 lessons (and one bonus lesson!) learned on a journey of discovery of who she is, what she wants, and that love is her divine right. Dawn Larsen is the 2020 National Artist of the Year, St. Louis Fringe Festival and the 2018 Rock House Songwriting Competition Winner. With special guest Janet Simpson, a beloved Birmingham based singer-songwriter Wide Open Country identified as “a brilliant genre-defying wordsmith with razor-sharp songwriting.”
